TL;DR
Four thresholds, all of which have to clear during a 31-day rolling window: 95% on-time shipping with tracking, 95% reply rate within 24 hours, 4.8 average review rating, and at least 5 orders. Plus "good standing", which is binary. The threshold most sellers actually fail isn't shipping — it's reply rate, by a wide margin.
The four, exactly
Here's what Etsy publishes, with the operational specifics seasoned sellers learn the hard way:

Then a fifth, binary one: good standing. No active policy violation. No matter the four metrics, an open IP claim or pending verification suspends the badge.
How each metric is calculated
Reply rate
Etsy counts the percentage of first buyer-initiated messages you replied to within 24 hours of receipt. The clock starts when Etsy logs the message in their system — not when you opened it, not when the email notification fired.
Edge cases that bite people:
- A buyer sends a Convo, then sends another Convo two hours later as a separate thread. Both clocks run independently. Two missed first-replies if you're slow on either.
- A buyer replies inside an existing thread. That doesn't enter the metric. Only the first message of the thread does.
- You set up an auto-reply ("we'll get back to you within 24 hours!"). The auto-reply doesn't count as your response. You still need a real reply within the window.
If you got 20 first-messages and replied to 19 within 24 hours, your rate is 95.0%. The bare minimum. One more miss and you're below threshold.
On-time shipping with tracking
Two conditions, both required: shipped on or before the deadline date listed on the order, AND a tracking number that registers a carrier scan.
The deadline comes from your processing time plus the order date. If your processing time says "1 to 3 business days" and an order arrives Tuesday, end of business Friday is the deadline. Saturday is too late, even by an hour.
Tracking has to be live by the time Etsy's system polls the carrier API — which happens at intervals nobody outside Etsy knows precisely. Practically: the carrier needs a scan event. A label printed but not dropped off doesn't count. "Label created" status without a scan is just a label sitting on your desk.
Average review rating
Etsy averages every review left within the trailing 31 days. A single 1-star pulls a 4.85 average to about 4.78 if you're a small shop with 30 reviews in the window. On a shop with 300 monthly reviews, the same 1-star pulls the average to 4.84 — still safely above threshold.
This math is why review rating becomes the metric that takes out small shops, even when reply rate and shipping are spotless. The denominator is the killer.
Order minimum
5 completed orders within the 31-day window. "Completed" means paid for and not cancelled. A refund without cancellation still counts as an order.
If you're a brand-new shop or a low-volume seasonal seller, hitting 5 is sometimes the actual blocker. The badge isn't unavailable to you — it's just not evaluating you.
Which threshold most sellers actually fail
The question every other help article dodges. Here's what we see in seller forums across 2024–2026, sorted by frequency of "I lost the badge because..." posts:

Reply rate — somewhere around 45% of badge losses. The 24-hour clock is unforgiving. A sick day, a long weekend, a phone notification that didn't come through — any of these can end a streak. It's also the metric most subject to buyer behavior you can't control (someone messaging at 11 PM expecting an instant reply).

Review rating — about 30%. One 1-star at the wrong time pulls a 4.83 average to 4.78 and ends a quarter of qualifying shops.

Shipping with tracking — about 15%. Usually labels purchased outside Etsy (no auto-tracking) or one missed deadline near a holiday weekend.

Order minimum — about 7%. Affects new shops and seasonal sellers.

Good standing — about 3%. Active investigations, copyright claims, verifications.
The takeaway: if you're going to spend energy on one metric, spend it on reply rate. It fails most often, it's the easiest to fix preemptively, and it's the only one entirely within your control once you have the right notification setup.
Common gotchas
The threshold is 95%, not "95% rounded". A 94.99% rate fails. Etsy displays the metric to one decimal place but evaluates to internal precision. If you see 94.9% on your dashboard, you're already failing.
Replies to your own outbound messages don't help. If you message a buyer first (say, to confirm a personalization) and they reply, your follow-up doesn't enter the metric calculation at all. Reply rate counts only buyer-initiated first contact.
Cancelled orders don't count toward the order minimum. A 5-order shop with 1 cancelled order is now a 4-order shop and ineligible regardless of the rest. (This one catches small sellers running occasional refund-and-cancel as customer service.)
Vacation mode does not reset the clock. Time in vacation mode still counts toward the 31-day window. Messages received during vacation mode still count. The only thing vacation mode does is stop new orders, which can ironically push you below the 5-order minimum if you stay paused too long.
How to read your dashboard
Etsy shows your current standing in the Stats tab under "Star Seller". Each metric displays as a percentage and a status (passing or not). A green checkmark means you'll qualify if today were review day; yellow or red means you're in trouble.
The numbers update once daily, usually overnight UTC. So a reply you send at 11 PM might not be reflected until the next morning's refresh. Don't panic if the dashboard lags.
The dashboard also shows a projected status for next review. That projection is a forecast, not a guarantee. It doesn't account for messages or orders that might land in the remaining days of the window.
What to do this week
If you want to lock in the badge for next month:
- Open the Star Seller dashboard. Note your weakest metric.
- If reply rate is weakest: reply to every open Convo right now. Set up the Etsy Seller mobile app's notifications to "every message", not "daily digest".
- If shipping is weakest: review the last 30 orders. Were any shipped late? Any without tracking? Find the pattern.
- If review rating is weakest: check unanswered low reviews. Reply publicly. Ask happy recent customers for a review (without bribing — that's a separate policy violation).
- If order count is weakest: run a low-budget promotion. Even $10/week on Etsy Ads tends to lift order count by 1 to 3 per week.
Set a recurring weekly calendar reminder for this audit. Star Seller isn't a one-time achievement — it's a habit.
What NOT to do
- Don't game the order minimum by buying from your own shop. Etsy's fraud system catches this, and getting flagged for fraud is much worse than missing the badge.
- Don't beg for 5-star reviews in your packaging insert. It violates Etsy policy and can backfire as a 1-star review for being pushy.
- Don't message buyers asking them to update a 4-star review to 5. Asking if everything was OK is fine. Asking for a rating change is not.
- Don't use third-party tools that auto-reply to messages from your account. Etsy's ToS prohibits automation that impersonates you.
